Streams are dynamic systems that consistently change their course and transport nutrients and sediment. However, human impacts have had a strong effect on the natural processes of streams. Due largely to changes in land use (converting forested areas to agriculture or urban development), flow within streams has changed substantially. This, in turn, has led to more issues being encountered with streams including flooding, erosion, loss of stream wildlife habitat, and degradation of stream water quality.
